Time-coded text tracks that display transcribed speech on screen. SRT and WebVTT are the two most common subtitle file formats.
Subtitles are transcribed speech with timestamps, so each line appears on screen at the right moment. The two common formats are SRT (SubRip) and VTT (WebVTT) — both are plain-text files pairing time ranges with lines of text.
Most transcription tools can export subtitles directly. They’re useful for video accessibility and SEO, and the timestamps double as anchors when you later search or cite a specific moment in a recording.
